Different Types of Waterspouts
As your local insurance agent, I’m always here to help you understand the risks that weather can bring, especially the ones we don’t hear about every day.
When most people hear waterspout, they picture a tornado over water. But there are actually two distinct types, and knowing the difference helps you understand your coverage needs:
Tornadic Waterspouts: These form from severe thunderstorms and behave just like land tornadoes. They can move onshore and cause significant damage.
Fair‑Weather Waterspouts: These develop on calm, sunny days. They’re usually weaker, but they can still pose risks to boaters and coastal property.
Even though waterspouts are more common along the coasts, their effects can reach inland, so it’s smart to make sure your home coverage and storm protection plan are up to date before storm season ramps up.
